Gaelscoil Bheanntraí was opened in 1994 when a group of parents in the Bantry area wanted to provide education through the medium of Irish for their children. The original Gaelscoil was situated in Barrack Street in the town but a newly purpose built school was opened in Seskin, Bantry in September 2011.

At Gaelscoil Bheanntraí, we believe that learning is a lifelong process beginning at home. We provide an environment in which children can develop into well-rounded young people. We foster a sense of curiosity and pride in achievement. We aim to encourage each child’s individuality.

While primarily a Catholic School, we welcome people of all denominations and beliefs.

Irish is the spoken language of our school. While most children enter the school with very little or no Irish they soon become fluent. We are very proud of our Irish heritage and culture and promote this through varied curricular and extra-curricular activities.

At our school we have many non-Irish speaking parents and we provide support for them eg. audio readers and Irish language classes.

Gaelscoil Bheanntraí has achieved the following 4 Green Schools Flags to date: Active School Award, Discovery Science and Maths Award, Health Promoting Schools Award, Digital School of Distinction Award, Sciath na Scol Award and recently the Amber Flag for the fantastic work that was carried out as part of promoting positive mental health in the school. We have begun work on attaining our 5th Green School’s award for biodiversity.

We have a range of after-school activities being held for our own pupils and children / adults from other schools every evening. These include musicial instruments eg. harp, accordion, tin whistle, flute, bodhrán, guitar, ukelele, banjo, concertina, table tennis, yoga, Irish dancing, singing club, drama, modern dance, arts and crafts, set dancing and scouts.

Beanntraí Ársa Teo provide an afterschool service to the children of the school. This includes helping with homework and providing other fun activities. The Board of Management does not have any responsibility in running this service.  The company rent a room in the school to provide this service.
