Meán Fómhair agus Deireadh Fómhair Rang 5 & 6

Bhí Ranganna a 5 is a 6 ag déanamh staidéar ar an saol ar Oileán Faoide fadó agus inniu agus chuadar ar cuairt chuig an oileán le Timmy Ó Laoghaire.  Bhí taispeántas sleamhnáin aige dúinn agus roinn sé an-chuid eolais linn faoi stair an oileáin.  Chuamar ar shiúlóid leis chuig an sean- oifig an phoist, an scoil agus an dún ag barr an chnoic.  Bhí radharc álainn againn don oileán ar fad agus chualamar faoi na heitleán a bhí ann le linn Cogadh Domhanda a hAon.  Ba lá aoibhinn é agus bhi an fharraige mar chlár ar an lá.  Tháinig beirt seanthuismitheoir ar cuairt chuig an rang chomh maith – Bn. Uí hÁinle, mamó le Shane agus Ethan a rugadh agus a tógadh ar an oileán agus Donnchadha Ó Loinsigh a bhí ag tiomáint báid isteach is amach go dtí an oileán nuair a bhí an tearmann ola á thógáil acu.  Dhein na páistí staidéar ar an tubaiste agus tá tionscnaimh á dhéanamh acu i ngrúpaí.

Ranganna a 5 is a 6 were studying life on Whiddy Island in the past and today and they went on a tour on the island with resident and guide Timmy O’Leary.  He showed the children slides with many old pictures of islanders and he shared his wealth of knowledge on the island’s history.  We went on a walk around the island visiting the old post office, the school and the fort at the top of the hill.  We had a wonderful panoramic view of the whole island and we heard about the battery towers and the U.S. naval base that was on Whiddy during World War 1.  We had a wonderful day and the sea was so calm that the boat trip pleasure.  Two grandparents also came to the class to share their stories about the island – Mrs. Hanley, Shane and Ethan’s granny who grew up on the island and Denis Lynch, Renato’s grandad who used to take materials in and out by boat to the island while the terminal was being built.  The children learned about the Whiddy Island Disaster and are currently finishing group projects on what they learned.

San Eolaíocht dheineamar báid a dhearadh le marla agus le hábhair athchúrsáilte.  Bhí comórtas againn féachaint cén grúpa gurbh fhéidir leo an méid is mó paisinéirí a iompar.  Tá teagasc stáisiún á dhéanamh againn sa Bhéarla sa seánraí scríbhneoireachta agus sa Mhata le cluichí matamaitice.

In Science class we designed and made boats with plasticine and recycled materials.  We held a competition to see which group’s boat could carry the most passengers.  Station teaching is happening in English for the writing genres and in Maths with mathematical games focusing on tables, averages and place value.

Agus sinn ag féachaint ar aghaidh don todhchaí beidh cinneadh an-mhór le déanamh againn sar i bhfad, sé sin meánscoil a phiocadh.  Tugadh cuireadh do Rang a 5 is a 6 dul ar cuairt chuig Scoil Mhuire Béal Átha an Ghaorthaigh agus chuig Coláiste Pobail Beanntraí. Fad is a bhíomar ar cuairt, bhí seans againn blaiseadh do ranganna difriúla a fháil ar nós Eolaíocht, Eacnamaíocht Bhaile, Adhmadóireacht, Miotalóireacht agus Spáinnis.

Looking ahead to the future, some big decisions have to be made with regard to secondary school.  Rang a 5 is a 6 were invited to Scoil Mhuire, Ballingeary and Coláiste Pobail Beanntraí to sample various classes like Science, Home Economics, Woodwork, Metalwork and Sport.  Both schools made a big impression on the children so they will be facing a dilemma.

Dheineamar staidéar chomh maith ar ár stair clainne agus dhein gach éinne amach craobh ghinealaigh.  Dhírigh gach éinne isteach ar dhuine amháin sa chlann agus dheineadar taighde ar an duine sin.  Scríobhadar rud éigin futhu.

The boys and girls researched and drew their family tree with a particular focus on one family member.  The resulting work looks very impressive and is very interesting.
