Autumn 2015

Oileán Faoide

Bhí tús an-ghnóthach don bhliain ag Rang a 5 agus a 6. Thosnaíomar amach ag déanamh staidéar ar ár oileán áitiúil Oileán Faoide.  Tháinig mamó le Conor Ó hÁinle isteach chun labhairt linn mar d’fhás sí suas ar an oiléan thart ar ochtó bliain ó shin. Bhí scéalta iontacha suimiúla ag Bn. Uí hÁinle dúinn.  Ní raibh dochtúir nó sagart nó múinteoir nó garda ina gcónaí ar an oileán agus dúirt sí go raibh an saol dian ann. Tháinig sí amach cúpla uair gach seachtain chun siopadóireacht a dhéanamh sa bhaile mór agus chun dul ar aifreann.

D’fhoghlaimíomar faoin tubaiste ola a tharla ann i 1979 nuair a phléasc an tancaer ola La Betelgeuse sa bhá in aice leis an oileán.  Maraíodh seachtar fear áitiúil agus bhí truailliú uafásach sa bhá.  Thug seanthuismitheoirí le Jayce Ó Cróinín isteach leabhar agus físeáin a bhain leis an tubaiste ola agus d’fhéachamar orthu.

Bhí lá iontach againn nuair a chuamar ar The Maid of the Isles amach ar cuairt go dtí an tearmann ola atá á rith anois ag Zenith Energy.  Thaispeáin Mario Minehane sinn timpeall agus bhí sé thar a bheith suimiúil.  Tá an-bhéim go deo acu anois ar chúrsaí sábháilteachta.

Dheineamar tionscnaimh i ngrúpaí bunaithe ar na rudaí a d’fhoghlaimíomar faoinár stair áitiúil.

Whiddy Island

Rang 5 & 6 had a very busy start to the school year. We started out studying about our local island, Whiddy. Conor Ó hÁinle’s nan, who grew up on the island, came in to talk to us about what life was like on the island almost eighty years ago. She had wonderful, interesting stories to tell us. We learned that there was no doctor, priest, teacher or guard living on the island and that life was very hard there. She came in to the mainland once or twice a week to do her shopping and to go go to mass.

We learned about the tragedy that happened on the island when the oil tanker Le Betelguese, which was next to the island, exploded. Seven local men were killed and the bay was badly polluted as a result. Jayce’s grandparents sent in a book and a video about the tragedy which we used as part of our study.

We had a great day setting of The Maid of the Isles on a visit to the oil terminal run by Zenith energy. Mario Minehane took us on a most interesting tour of the terminal and he explained the massive emphasis on safety at the terminal now.
